La Villa Central de Beirut
Esta área, llena de oficinas, locales comerciales y
el sector bancario, trae a la memoria el Beirut glorioso
al que turistas de todo el mundo acudían durante el
verano para vivir una experiencia inolvidable.
Se sugiere caminar por la Av. Wigan, con su merca-
do de flores, sus tiendas de antigüedades, de artículos
finos, ropa y artículos internacionales y locales. Cerca,
se encuentra la Plaza de los Mártires, llamada anterior-
mente Plaza de los Cañones, alrededor de la cual, hay
tiendas populares, restaurantes típicos y el famoso
mercado del oro, tan atractivo para los paseantes, así
como calles peatonales, jardines y monumentos. En el
centro de la plaza se aprecia el Monumento a los Márti-
res, dedicado a quienes lucharon por la libertad del país.
El turista puede disfrutar en el Beirut que une al
pasado y el presente, gracias al proyecto SOLIDERE,
con el cual la ciudad resurgió embellecida y conser-
vando su rasgo oriental de refinado estilo. Arcadas
junto al concreto de formas modernas, techos típicos,
herrería trabajada con sofisticación y edificios de cris-
tal junto a antiguas construcciones; iglesias y mez-
quitas juntas, como símbolo de una ciudad que libró la
guerra, por su profundo deseo de vivir en paz.
Es impresionante la cantidad de gente que hay
en las calles que desembocan en Nejmeh Square, con
atractivos que hacen de esta Place d’Etoile, como mu-
chos le llaman, el punto de cita de libaneses y turistas.
Pintores y fotógrafos exhiben sus obras alrededor del
reloj que hay en la torre erigida en 1897 por los oto-
manos al centro de la plaza, una obra convertida en
un símbolo de Beirut; el reloj que esta colocado en una
torre al centro de la glorieta, fue donado en 1932 por
el señor Miguel E. Abed, quien emigró a México.

This area, filled with offices, retail stores and
banking sectors, brings to mind the glorious Beirut
that tourists from around the world meet during
the summer for an unforgettable experience.
We suggest walking along Wigan Ave., with its
flower market, antique shops, fine goods, and cloth-
ing, both international and local. Nearby, Martyrs’
Square is found, formerly called Cañone Square,
around which, popular shops, typical restaurants
and the famous gold market as attractive for walk-
ers and pedestrian streets, gardens and monu-
ments are located. In the center of the square you
can see the Monument to the Martyrs, dedicated to
those who fought for freedom of the country.
Tourists can enjoy the Beirut that unites the
past with the present, this is achieved thanks to the
SOLIDERE project, with which the city resurfaced
embellished and keeping its refined oriental style.
Arcades along the concrete of modern shapes, typi-
cal roofs, ironwork crafted with sophistication and
glass buildings next to old buildings, churches and
mosques together, are a symbol of a city that fought
the war, due to it’s deep desire to live in peace.
A tremendous amount of people in the streets lead
toNejmehSquare,withattractionsthatmakethisPlace
d’Etoile, as many call it, this setting is the the point of
rendezvous for many Lebanese and tourists. Painters
and photographers exhibit their work around the clock
that is in the tower erected in 1897 by the Ottomans
found in the center of the square, a work turned into a
symbol of Beirut, the clock that is placed on a tower at
the center of the roundabout, was donated in 1932 by
Mr.Miguel E. Abed, whoemigrated toMexico.
