la gente de la época lo creía dueño de la ciudad, pues

el comercio del café, para invertir en el llamado oro ne-
gro, lo que lo llevará en el año de 1870 a fundar la fa-

Standar Oil
. Con la idea de producir un depurado
keroseno, capaz de llegar a los hogares más distantes
del país. Para lograr el objetivo era necesaria su distri-
bución, estrategia que le hará buscar negociaciones
con el único constructor de vías férreas de la época, el
acaudalado Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), de quien
obtiene un contrato conveniente logrando su fin.
