oaquín Rodrigo nació en Sagunto, provincia
de Valencia el 22 de noviembre de 1901. Pier-
de la vista casi por completo a los tres años
después de haber contraído difteria. Su ta-
lento precoz fue detectado por los músicos
valencianos locales, cuidó sus estudios el notable
compositor, folklorista y escritor Eduardo López. El
espíritu de Valencia se pone de manifiesto en todas
las obras de Rodrigo. Este espíritu parece ser el del
Mediterráneo, que es la esencia de las razas que han
habitado alrededor de esta marina histórica. Valen-
cia, al igual que Barcelona, es europea en sus puntos
de vista y los biógrafos de Rodrigo han registrado
sus tendencias internacionales conforme va avan-
zando su labor de composición.
Inició sus estudios de solfeo, piano y violín a
los ocho años, y armonía y composición a los 16.
Aunque contribuyó decisivamente a elevar el lu-
gar que hoy ocupa la guitarra en el mundo de los
conciertos, nunca pudo tocar este instrumento.
Sus composiciones fueron escritas en braille y
transcritas para su publicación.

oaquín Rodrigo was born in Sagunto, within
the Province of Valencia on november 22,
1901. He lost his sight when he was only 3
years old due to complications from Diph-
theria. His precocious talent was recognized
by local Valencian musicians and his studies were
supervised by the notable composer, folklorist and
writer Eduardo López. The Spirit of Valencia appears
in all the Works of Rodrigo. This spirit evokes the
Mediterranean, which is the essence of the races
that have populated this historical marineland.
Valencia, just as Barcelona is european in its view-
points and Rodrigo’s biographers have manifested
his international tendencies throughout his com-
posing career.
At age eight he studied solfege, piano and vio-
lin and moved on to harmony and composition at
eighteen. Although he contributed decisively to
elevate the importance of the guitar in the concert
world,he never played the instrument. His compo-
sitions were written in Braille, and transcribed for
their publication.
