Temprano zarpamos por el mar de Flores, nave-
gando entre islas y penínsulas hasta alcanzar la isla
de Komodo declarada parque nacional. Nos anclamos
en la hermosa bahía donde el mar de color jade lamía
las playas de arena blanca al pie de las colinas áridas
y amarillas. Después de registrarnos en la entrada del
parque, tuvimos enseguida nuestro primer encuentro
con el famoso dragón, el varano más grande y feroz
del mundo que puede alcanzar de 2 a 3 metros de lar-
go y pesar 70 kg. Estaba en su propio hábitat, la isla
donde se ha conservado. Es un reptil carnívoro extre-
madamente peligroso que ataca con su potente cola o
muerde a su presa hasta matarla, y su saliva contie-
ne tantas bacterias que si el animal no ha muerto, lo
hará por infección y el dragón lo devorará entonces.
Comen también mucha carroña. Unos ejemplares se
encontraban cerca de la caseta y el cuidador echó un
gallo que no tuvo tiempo de reaccionar cuando ya se
encontraba en la boca del dragón, gritando su último
canto. Nos llevaron, protegidos por unos guardianes,
por la isla, observando las orquídeas, los loros y las
cacatúas salvajes, hasta encerrarnos en un pequeño
mirador cercado donde podíamos observar una gran
