creada en 22 a.C. por Herodes para ser la capital con su
puerto. Así fue durante siglos, como lo atestiguan su gran
anfiteatro, su hipódromo, palacios, baños, sus pisos de
mármol y sus elegantes columnas, su acueducto. Cambió
de manos varias veces, entre árabes y cruzados, hasta ser
abandonada en el siglo XIII. Sus dormidas ruinas transmiten
un sereno sentimiento, imaginando la grandeza de esos
almacenes comerciales y la elegancia de sus palacios.
Jaffa y Tel Aviv
Con una tranquila navegación alcanzamos Tel Aviv,
la gran ciudad de los rascacielos alineados a lo largo de
la costa, con sus largas playas de arena, sus hoteles
y restaurantes, su ambiente de ciudad en perpetuas
vacaciones. Desembarcamos en el puerto de Jaffa, la
antigua ciudad árabe, un rincón de encanto dentro de
la gran metrópolis y al pasear por sus antiguos calle-
jones y escaleras, nos transportamos en el tiempo de
Saladín, disfrutando esa tranquila ciudadela musul-
mana dominada por la torre de la iglesia de San Pedro,
con el anfiteatro romano a sus pies. Sus casas tradicio-
nales de color ocre conservan el encanto de antaño, su
puerto pesquero le da su alma y su magia, unos hom-
bres pescan desde el malecón.
En contraste, el tráfico de Tel Aviv asalta, sus
avenidas modernas y sus jardines tranquilizan. Recor-
rimos la costera con sus elegantes edificios, el mer-
cado Carmel con sus gritos y sus colores locales donde
las aceitunas, pasteles, frutas, verduras y ropas co-
habitaban, las calles tranquilas y sombreadas donde
camina la gente vestida a la última moda, los centros
comerciales y los bares llenos de jóvenes, las anima-
das calles Bialik, Sheinken, King George. Es la ciudad
para divertirse, de bares, discotecas, de restaurantes
en museos, de playa en cine. La gente no es religiosa
como en Jerusalén, las terrazas de los cafés o paste-
lerías se llenan, judíos de todos orígenes, palestinos
musulmanes y cristianos conviven en armonía.

city of the sky-scrapers aligned along the coast, with
their long beaches of sand, their hotels and restau-
rants, their city atmosphere in perpetual vacations.
We disembarked in the port of Jaffa, the oldArab city,
a corner of charm inside of the great metropoli when
we went for a walk for their old alleys and stairways,
we were transported ourselves in the time of Sala-
din, enjoying that calm Muslim citadel dominated
by the tower of San Pedro’s church with the Roman
amphitheater to their feet. Their traditional houses
of color ocher conserve the charm of in the past,
their fishing port gives him its soul and its magic,
some men fish from the pier.
In contrast, the traffic of Tel Aviv assaults,
its modern avenues and its gardens tranquilize.
We traveled the coastal one with their elegant
buildings, the Carmel market with their local co-
lors where the olives, pastries, fruits, vegetables
and clothes cohabited, the calm and shady streets
where people walk dressed to the last fashion, the
commercial centers and the bars were full of young
people, the lively streets Bialik, Sheinken, King
George. It is the city to have a good time, with bars,
discoteques, restaurants in museums, beaches and
cinema. People are not religious as in Jerusalem,
the terraces of the coffees or pastry shops are filled,
Jews of all origins, Muslim Palestinian and Chris-
tian cohabit in harmony.
