Al pasar el control israelita que cierra el paso a la ciu-
dad más baja del planeta (260 metros bajo el nivel del
mar) y la más antigua siempre habitada, me interro-
garon, nos reímos y me desearon buena suerte como
si entrara en el infierno.
Jericó es una ciudad palestina tranquila, aplastada
por el calor y el aire seco que huele a hierbas. La gente
nos miraba con sorpresa, querían conversar y se reían
cuando les hablaba en árabe-marroquí. Hacia el norte,
nos encontramos con la carretera destruida y tuvimos
que tomar un camino tormentoso en plena Palestina
rural, apacible, donde las mujeres se cubren la cabeza
y los hombres trabajan la tierra. Otro control israelí
nos anunció que salíamos del recinto palestino.
El deseo de conocer Nablus, la ciudad de los 30
minaretes, nos llevó a cruzar las soberbias monta-
ñas, cubiertas de olivos, donde las aceitunas a punto
de ser cosechadas, estallaban en verde o negro. La
comunidad judía de los Samaritanos creen que del
Monte Gerizim, cerca de Nablus, Dios cogió la tierra
para crear a Adán. Un importante control israelí ce-
rraba el paso y el soldado se río y me dijo: “puedes ir si
quieres, pero no con ese coche porque te van a echar
piedras. Aquí es un nido de terroristas y hay muchos
riesgos. Tendrías que tomar un taxi desde aquí”. Poco
convencidos, intrigados y desolados de ver Palestina
tan bloqueada, decidimos regresar a la carretera 90.
Siguiendo el Valle del Jordán, con sus campos de
dátiles y cultivos en medio del desierto, llegamos al
Mar de Galilea. Visitamos el lugar sagrado donde el
Río Jordán sale de ese gran lago y abordamos nuestra
lancha. Su orilla está repleta de hoteles, restaurantes,
playas privadas, camping, barcos y jet ski, bañistas, y
se adorna de plantaciones de palmeras de dátiles y de
viñedos, rodeados por montañas de color ocre.

place where the Jordan River leaves that great lake
and we boarded our boat. Their bank is replete of
hotels, restaurants, private beaches, camping sites,
ships and jet ski, swimmers, and it is adorned of
plantations of palms of dates and vineyards, su-
rrounded by mountains of color ocher.
