The Hermitage Museum
This museum is an obliged visit when you are in Saint
Petersburg. It is one of the largest, complete and
famous museums of the world. The main building of
the museum is the ancient Palace of Winter baroque
style, built between 1754 and 1762 for the Empress
Elizabeth, daughter of the city founder, Peter the Great.
In spite of the original plans, was Katherine the Great
who really lived in the palace because Elizabeth died
before it was finished.
After assuming the throne by means of a coup
against her husband, Katherine the Great established
her residence in the Palace of Winter. The interest of
the Empress fro the art materialized in her constant
search for acquiring great pieces. The museum was
founded in 1764 when Katherine acquired 255 pain-
tings of great masters in the city of Berlin.
Nowadays, the collection of the museum is formed
formore than threemillions of pieces fromworks of the
ancient Egypt to art from the XXth century. Among the
innumerable pieces in this museum the paintings of
Leonardo da Vinci, Miguel Angelo, Rafael, Tiziano,
Rembrandt, and Rubens, many French Impressionists
such as Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, as well as works of Van
Gogh, Matisse, and Gauguin and Picasso standout. The
collection is sovast that it’s said that toadmireeachone
of themfor oneminute youwouldneed elevenyears.
The fortress of Peter and Paul
This construction encloses a great part of the city’s
history. When Peter the Great grabbed this territory

El museo del Hermitage
Este museo es una visita obligada cuando se está en
San Petersburgo. Se trata de uno de los museos más
grandes, completos y célebres del mundo. El edificio
principal del museo es el antiguo Palacio de Invierno de
estilo barroco, construido entre 1754 y 1762 para la
Emperatriz Elizabeth, hija del fundador de la ciudad,
Pedro el Grande. Pese a los planes originales, fue
Catalina la Grande quien realmente habitó del palacio
ya que Elizabeth murió antes de que fuera terminado.
Después de tomar el trono mediante un golpe de
estado en contra de su marido, Catalina la Grande esta-
bleció su residencia en el Palacio de Invierno. El interés
de la Emperatriz por el arte se materializó en su cons-
tante búsqueda por adquirir grandes obras. El museo
fue fundado en 1764 cuando Catalina adquirió 255 cua-
dros de grandes maestros en la ciudad de Berlín.
En la actualidad, la colección del museo está forma-
da por más de tres millones de piezas que van desde
obras del antiguo Egipto hasta arte del s. XX. Entre las
innumerables obras en este museo destacan cuadros
de Leonardo da Vinci, Miguel Ángel, Rafael, Tiziano,
Rembrandt, Rubens, muchos Impresionistas franceses
como Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, así como obras de Van
Gogh, Matisse, Gaugin y Picasso. La colección es tan
vasta que se dice que para admirar cada una de las
obras por un minuto se necesitarían once años.
La fortaleza de Pedro y Pablo
Esta construcción encierra una gran parte de la his-
toria de la ciudad. Cuando Pedro el Grande arrebató
