las partes más sólidas y compactas. En el lago produ-
cido por el deshielo del glaciar es posible observar
numerosos pedazos de hielo esculpido en las formas
más diversas con líneas verticales y algunas circula-
res. Se trata de esculturas naturales que yacen en el
agua y nos permiten admirarlas al pasar.
El agua helada producida por el glaciar tiene un
color intenso, casi lechoso, debido a los sedimentos
que encierra en su caudal. Durante los periodos de
mayor deshielo, aumenta la cantidad de sedimentos
provenientes del glaciar hacia los lagos, de manera
que en algunos casos las aguas lacustres cambian
notoriamente de coloración durante el año. Esto es lo
que comúnmente se conoce como leche glacial.
Los glaciares no están hechos solamente de hielo
sino que transportan en su superficie numerosos
bloques de roca. Las rocas enclaustradas en el glaciar
contribuyen también a la erosión de los valles duran-
te los movimientos del glaciar. Cuando la alimenta-
ción del glaciar es mayor que el derretimiento, éste
crece o avanza. Si ocurre lo contrario, disminuye o
retrocede. También es posible que un glaciar comien-
ce a fluir sólo por efectos gravitacionales.

one may observe an assortment of ice chunks
sculpted in many diverse shapes with vertical
lines and some circles. These natural sculptures lie
in the water and may be admired by passersby.
The icy water produced by the glacier has an
intense color, nearly milky, as a result of the sedi-
ment that rushes in upon the flow. During the
periods of greatest ice melt, there is an increase in
the quantity of sediment that flows from the gla-
cier toward the lakes, so that in some cases the
murky water drastically changes color during the
year. This is what is commonly referred to as gla-
cial milk.
The glaciers are not made solely of ice but
transport along their surfaces many rock forma-
tions. The rocks encrusted in the glacier also con-
tribute to the erosion of the valleys during the
glacier movements. When the glacier is fed more
than it melts, growth or advance results. If the
opposite occurs, the result is diminution or retreat.
It is also possible that a glacier begins to flowpure-
ly as a result of gravitational effect.
