En el siglo XV, los intrépidos exploradores marítimos
portugueses, encabezados por Vasco da Gama, descu-
brieron nuevos territorios y dieron origen a la creación de
un imperio de ultramar.
Asimismo goza de una rica historia de navegación y
descubrimientos. Mirando hacia el Océano Atlántico des-
de la Península Ibérica, su historia ha dejado una huella in-
deleble en la cultura, que se nota en las influencias árabes
y orientales, tanto en la arquitectura como en las artes.
País con historia que empuja a la cultura y al sa-
ber, posee una de las más antiguas universidades de
Europa: la Universidad de Coimbra, fundada en 1290
y ubicada en la ciudad de la que toma el nombre. Una
ciudad de estudiantes, sumamente cultural, históri-
ca y con sabor antiguo.
Es importante señalar que Portugal es un país para
recorrerse en auto. Conmás de 2000 kmde autopistas de
excelente calidad, lamejormanera de conocer Portugal es
en este tipo de transporte. De norte a sur, Portugal tiene
750 km que se pueden recorrer en seis horas. Sin embar-
go, hay tanto que ver, disfrutar y descubrir que el recorri-
do le llevará bastantemás de ese tiempo estimado.
Los visitantes optan por alguna de las dos
grandes temporadas: la de verano (julio - agosto),
cuyo turismo es sobre todo familiar, por coincidir
con las vacaciones escolares, y que se concentra
en las playas y los deportes al aire libre; o bien
la temporada de primavera-otoño (mayo - junio
y septiembre), cuyo turismo -más para adultos-
busca otras actividades que sean cómodas y con
buena temperatura, como la vendimia en el Duero
durante septiembre.

In the 15th century, the adventurous ex-
ploring sailors led by Vasco da Gama, discov-
ered new land and began the creation of the
Portuguese overseas Empire.

discoveries. Looking towards theAtlanticOcean from
the Iberia Peninsula, Portugal’s history has left an

and Oriental influences in both architecture and arts.
A country that promotes culture and knowl-
edge, and have one of the oldest universities in
