El legado para la humanidad
Una de las principales construcciones de la Ciudad del
Vaticano, o al menos lamás famosa es, sin duda, la Capi-
lla Sixtina. La primera misa en la Capilla Sixtina se cele-
bró el 15 de agosto de 1483, en la que fue consagrada a
la Virgen de la Asunción.
Su nombre lo recibe del papa Sixto IV (1471-
1484) quien mandó reestructurar la antigua Capilla
Magna. La decoración de las paredes estuvo a cargo
de pintores como Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghir-
landaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Lucas Signorelli, Pietro Pe-
rugino y Pinturicchio. El papa Julio II, por su parte,
encargó a Miguel Ángel el decorado de la bóveda que
fue realizado entre 1508 y 1512. El Juicio universal
pintado en la pared del altar entre 1536 y 1541 tam-
bién sería realizado por él.
En la parte del centro de la bóveda Miguel Ángel
representó nueve historias del Génesis divididas en
grupos de tres. Éstas se refieren al origen del uni-
verso: Separación de la tierra de las aguas, Creación
de los astros y los planetas y Creación de la luz; ori-
gen del hombre: Creación de Adán, Creación de Eva
y Pecado original y expulsión del paraíso terrenal; y
origen del mal: Sacrificio de Noé, Diluvio universal
y Embriaguez de Noé. Todas ellas enmarcadas por
pinturas de profetas y sibilas, los antepasados de
Cristo y las representaciones de algunos episodios
de la salvación del pueblo de Israel.
El Juicio universal se centra en la figura de Cristo re-
presentadoenel instanteenqueemiteveredictoel díadel
juicio final, a su lado se encuentra la Virgen, ambos están
rodeados por algunos Santos quienes están a la espera
del veredicto, entre ellos se puede ver a san Pedro con dos
llaves, san Bartolomé con su propia piel, santa Catalina de
Alejandría con una rueda dentada y san Sebastián con fle-
chas en la mano. En la parte central de abajo los ángeles
del Apocalipsis despiertan a los muertos, a la izquierda se
encuentran los resucitados que suben al cielo y a la dere-
cha aquéllos que han sido condenados.

The legacy for humanity
One of the main buildings of the Vatican, or at least
the most famous, is undoubtedly the Sistine Cha-
pel. The first Mass in the Sistine Chapel took place
on August 15th, 1483, whichwas consecrated to Our
Lady of the Assumption.
Its name receives it from Pope Sixtus IV (1471-
1484) who ordered to restor the old Cappella Magna.
The decoration of the walls was conducted by paint-
ers like Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Co-
simo Rosselli, Lucas Signorelli, Pietro Perugino and
Pinturicchio. Pope Julius II, for his part, commis-
sioned to Michelangelo the ceiling decoration that
was made between 1508 and 1512. The
Last Judge-
ment
, painted on the altar wall between 1536 and
1541, it also was made by him.
In the central part of the ceiling Michelangelo
represented nine stories of Genesis divided into
groups of three. These relate the origin of the uni-
verse:
Separation of Land from Sea, Creation of the sun,
moon and planets and Separation of Light from Dark-
ness; origin of man: Creation of Adam, Creation of Eve
and Original Sin and Original Sin and Banishment from
the Garden of Eden; and origin of evil: Sacrifice of Noah,
The Flood andDrunkenness of Noah.
All of themframed
by paintings of prophets and sibyls, the ancestors of
Christ and representations of some episodes of the
salvation of Israel.
The
Last Judgement
is centered on the figure of
Christ represented in the instant that gives the ver-
dict on judgment day, next to him is the Virgin, both
are surrounded by some saints who are awaiting the
verdict, among themit can see St. Peterwith two keys,
St. Bartholomewwithhis own skin, St. Catherine from
Alexandria with a cogwheel and St. Sebastian with ar-
rows in his hand. In the central part below, the angels
of Revelation awake the dead, to the left are the resur-
rected who are ascending to heaven and to the right
thosewho have been condemned.
