Scheherazade, Symphonic Suite (After The Thou-
sandandOneNights) Op. 35
Premiere: St. Petersburg,Winter 1888-89
The story of Scheherazade, drawn from the Ara-
bian Nights, is concerned with the powerful Sultan
Schariar who,convinced of all women’s unfaithful-
ness, decides to put his wives to death. One of theses,
Scheherazade,saves herself by spinning colorful yarns
which,stretching over one thousand and one nights in
the telling, so intriogue the Sultan that he changes his
mind and spares her life. The voice of Scheherazade is
assigned to the first violin of the orchestra while the
narrative captures our interest and imagination.

Russian Easter Overture, Op. 36
Premiere: 1888
Rimsky-Korsakov based his Overture on theme-
lodic part of the Obikhod, a collection of canticles
of the Russian Orthodox Church. Its describes the
Pagan-Christian ritual of Old Russia known as “Lu-
minous Festive Day”.
The central part is a formidable description
of the Prophet Isaiah concerning the resurrec-
tion of Christ. The music increases its pulse and
when played as it should be, captivates the au-
dience. The orchestration is another example of
the complete genius Rimsky was in the handling
of the instrumentalists.

Scherazade, Suite Sinfónica (basada en Las mil y

La historia de Scheherazade narra la histo-
ria del Sultan Schariar, que convencido de la in-
fidelidad de las mujeres, decide darle muerte a
todas sus esposas. Una de ellas, Scheherazade
se salva contándole cuentos al Sultan por mil
y una noches hasta lograr cambiar su edicto y
otorgarle el perdón. La voz de Scheherazade es
asignada al primer violín de la orquesta y la na-
rración provoca nuestra máxima imaginación
e interés.

La Gran Pascua Rusa, Obertura de Concierto, Op. 36
Estreno: 1888
Rimsky-Korsakov tomó la parte melódica de
esta obra del Obikhod, una colección de cánticos de
la Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa. Describe el ritual pagano-
cristiano de la vieja Rusia, conocido como “Día fes-
tivo brillante”.
La parte central maneja una descripción formidable
de la profecía de Isaías sobre la Resurrección de Cristo.
Esta es música que acelera el pulso y cuando se toca
como debe de ser, logra cautivar a los auditorios. La or-
questación es otra muestra del dominio tan completo
que ejercía Rimsky en el manejo de sus huestes instru-
mentales.
