DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975)
Estudió con su madre, una pianista profesional y des-
pués Shteynberg en el Conservatorio de Petrogrado. A
los 19 años compuso su Primera Sinfonía como ejer-
cicio de graduación. Dijo el jurado: “Suficientemente
moderna para ser interesante y suficientemente aca-
démica para ser agradable”. Siguieron varias compo-
siciones menores por su confección propagandística y
se animó a escribir una ópera, La Nariz, criticada como
un pedazo de decadencia burguesa. No se desanimó
y siguió Lady Macbeth de Mtsensk, una obra notable
que iba por el camino del éxito. En una famosa función
en Leningrado, Josef Stalin, tirano, dictador y “experto
enmúsica” se salió de una función y el periódico oficial
Pravda participó en los ataques vitriólicos. Para ocu-
par su tiempo compuso música para películas, piezas
para piano, música de cámara y ballets. Con la Quinta
Sinfonía se reivindicó y ha sido ejecutada por años en
todo el mundo.

First Symphony when he was 19 years old as a gradua-
tion excersize. The Jury said:”Sufficientlymodern to be
interesting, and sufficiently academic to be agreeable”.
Several minor Works followed, all covering Soviet pro-
paganda and he decided to try his luck with an opera,
The Nose which was criticized as a piece of bourgeois
decadence. Nothing daunted, he wrote a second opera,
LadyMacbethofMzensk, a remarkableworkwhichwas
well received. At a famous performance in Leningrad,
Josef Stalin ,tyrant,Dictator and “Music expert” walked
out of the performance and the oficial newspaper Prav-
da tookpart on the attacks that followed. Shostakovich
taught at the Lenin Conservatory, wrote piano pieces,
chambermusic andfilmmusic andbidedhis time. Vin-
dicationcamewiththeFifthSymphonywhichhasbeen
playedever since all over theworld.
