Cárdenas le otorgó asilo en México. Se ligó al surrea-
lismo y a la Escuela Mexicana Muralista. En Coyoacán,
Ciudad de México, recibe a André Breton, junto con
Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, signan el “Manifiesto por
un arte revolucionario e independiente”, que es una
línea estética revolucionaria de la vanguardia creativa
plástica, teatro, literatura: “El arte como la ciencia, no
sólo no necesita órdenes sino que por su propia esen-
cia no las tolera. La creación artística obedece a sus
propias leyes”. (Trotsky, 1938).
La relación con los surrealistas es poco conocida;
Breton y Benjamín Péret firmaron el Manifiesto por un
Arte Revolucionario e Independiente, en México, en
1938, pero en el grupo estaban Max Ernest, Leonora
Carrington; Remedios Varo, entre otros. Su casa, en
Viena 9, Coyoacán, Ciudad de México, honra el derecho
al asilo político y es un museo. Sus archivos están en
la Universidad de Harvard, EUA. Y su obra principal es
“Literatura y Revolucion”.
