of the world and stand out because of their color
and different features. It is as if the whole planet
found a way to form the soul of this small island,
conveying cultures and religions, inventing a
world of cultural harmony. Europeans, Africans,
Asians, Hindus, among others, live in harmony in
this small Nirvana born of the winds that sweep
history.
We stayed in La Samanna, the most exclusive
hotel of the island and one of the best of the
Caribbean. Located at the edge of a small cliff that
delimits a long white sand beach bordered by the
turquoise sea, this hotel, hidden in a tropical gar-
den, has rooms that are a refuge in which to enjoy
the spectacular scenery. As if this were not
enough, its chef is dedicated to creating fascinat-
ing fusion cuisine.
Our sailboat was waiting at the marina in
Marigot, the French capital. From there, we started
our journey around the island, which is divided in
two areas of different characteristics. To the west it
is an atoll of low lands surrounding a lagoon. To
the east it is a group of hills (du Paradis, the high-
est peak, is 420 meters/1,378 feet high), lagoons
that are set between the hills and bays that trace a
coast sprinkled with isles and coral reefs. Here the
sea is very colorful and the sky bursts with tones
of blue even though it is also painted with menac-
ing clouds that explode into tropical storms.
FromMarigot to Ilet Pinel
Marigot is an authentic French town nestled at the
foot of a hill guarded by the Saint Louis fort, from
which the view is spectacular. The streets lead to
resaltan por sus colores y rasgos tan diversos, como
si el planeta entero se hubiera encontrado para for-
mar el alma de una pequeña isla, trayendo sus cultu-
ras y religiones, inventando un mundo de armonía
cultural. Europeos, africanos, asiáticos, hindúes,
entre otros, conviven en armonía en ese pequeño nir-
vana surgido de los vientos que barren la historia.
Nos alojamos en el hotel más exclusivo de la
isla, uno de los mejores del Caribe: La Samanna, al
borde de un pequeño acantilado que delimita una
larga playa de arena blanca bordeada por el mar
turquesa. Este hotel, escondido en un jardín tropi-
cal, tiene habitaciones que son un refugio para dis-
frutar de una espectacular vista; y como si esto
fuera poco, su chef se ha dedicado a crear una fas-
cinante cocina de fusión.
Nuestro velero se encontraba en la marina de
Marigot, la capital francesa. Desde aquí empezamos
nuestro recorrido alrededor de la isla, que se divide
en dos zonas de relieve diferente. Al oeste es un ato-
lón de tierras bajas que rodea a una laguna. El este es
un conjunto de colinas (la cima más alta tiene 420
metros, y es el Pico du Paradis) y lagunas que se
insertan entre las lomas, y bahías que recortan la
costa salpicada de islotes y arrecifes de coral. Aquí el
mar es muy colorido, el cielo estalla de azules, aun-
que también se pinta de nubes amenazadoras que
explotan en lluvias tropicales.
Desde Marigot hasta Ilet Pinel
Marigot es un auténtico pueblo francéés al pie de la
colina dominada por el Fuerte Saint Louis, desde el
cual la vista es espectacular. Los callejones llevan a
