Quartier D’Orleans, antigua capital del lado francés
hasta 1768, un tranquilo pueblo que se encuentra a
la orilla de la frontera.
Siguiendo la costa hacia el sur pasamos por unas
playas sorprendentemente bellas, con sus arrecifes
de coral: Baie Lucas y Oyster Pond, que marca la
frontera y donde se encuentra una pequeña marina
muy acogedora, Red Pond Bay. La costa holandesa
se vuelve muy salvaje, con cactus creciendo en las
lomas que terminan en acantilados, donde se desli-
zan los vientos del Atlántico, ofreciendo unas zonas
interesantes para los buzos.
Guana Bay es una hermosa playa de arena blan-
ca protegida por la roca Popes’s Head y donde las
colinas vírgenes se suceden una tras otra.
Seguimos este rumbo hasta encontrar un peque-
ño pueblo de pescadores antes de pasar Point
Blanche, el cabo que nos permite penetrar de nuevo
en el mar Caribe y descubrir la hermosa Great Bay,
donde se encuentra Philipsburg, la capital holandesa.
Philipsburg fue fundada en 1733, está protegi-
da por los fuertes Willen y Ámsterdam, al oeste, y
por el viejo fuerte español en Punta Blanche al
este. Philipsburg se halla en una angosta lengua de
tierra atrapada entre el mar y la Laguna Great Bay
Salt Pond. Esta laguna, de aguas estancadas sala-
das, será rehabilitada para volverla un santuario de
pájaros. El puerto ofrece el albergue ideal para los
grandes cruceros, y nosotros atracamos en Boby’s

and the former capital of the French side until
1768.
Following the coast to the south we passed
Baie Lucas and Oyster Pond, surprisingly beautiful
beaches with coral reefs that mark the border and
where Red Pond Bay, a small, cozy marina, is locat-
ed. The Dutch coast becomes very wild, with cacti
growing on hills that turn into cliffs, where the
Atlantic winds skim by, offering attractive scuba
diving areas.
Guana Bay is a stunning white sand beach pro-
tected by Pope’s Head rock and where pristine hills
succeed one another.
We followed this route until we found a small
fishing village before passing Point Blanche, the
cape that allowed us to reenter the Caribbean Sea
and discover gorgeous Great Bay, where
Philipsburg, the Dutch capital, is located.
Philipsburg, established in 1733, is protected
by the Willen and Amsterdam forts to the west
and by the old Spanish fort in Point Blanche to the
east. Philipsburg is located on a narrow strip of
land trapped between the sea and the Great Bay
Salt Pond lagoon. This lagoon, of salty, stagnant
water, will be rehabilitated and turned into a bird
sanctuary.
The port offers ideal shelter for huge cruise
ships and we docked at Boby’s to spend the night
and visit this charming town on the edge of an
extensive white sand beach. The wooden houses,
