Reviviendo el comienzo
Actualmente se puede disfrutar de un paseo de más
de 8 km por el Winner Creek Gorge, a bordo de un pe-
queño tranvía que pasa por un exuberante bosque, si-
guiendo el sendero de Crow Pass, para disfrutar de un
asombroso paseo alpino, donde los carneros de Dall
se hacen presentes, el cual cuenta con reliquias de la
época de las minas de oro, un glaciar y un lago alpi-
no. Pero para rendir tributo al origen de estas tierrras,
nada como subirse al Alaska Railroad, ferrocarril que
desde 1923 ha proporcionado servicio de transporte
a los puertos y comunidades del centro-sur y del in-
terior de Alaska.
Por más de 90 años este tranvía ha sabido cubrir
todo tipo de necesidades, de las propias de la conquis-
ta de un territorio inhóspito, hasta las más actuales
como transporte turístico. Los paquetes de aventura
ferroviaria incluyen una amplia variedad de alojamien-
tos y excursiones en un trayecto de aproximadamen-
te 800 kilómetros, en trenes que operan diariamente
en el verano y en invierno sólo los fines de semana.
Durante el verano las estrellas de los recorridos
son el Denali Star, con dos trenes; uno corre al sur
de Fairbanks a Anchorage y el otro va al norte de
Anchorage a Fairbanks; ambos se detienen en Ta-
lkeetna y Denali. El Coastal Classic, en el que se va
de Anchorage a Seward, parando en Girdwood, y
luego regresa de Seward el mismo día. Así como el
Glacier Discovery, que parte de Anchorage a Whit-
tier, parando dos veces en Portage antes de conti-
nuar hacia Spencer Whistle Stop y Grandview. Este
tren vuelve a Portage y Whittier, pero no a Anchora-
ge. Los pasajeros que regresan a Anchorage toman
un autobús de Portage.
Reliving the beginning
At present, one can enjoy a trip of more than 8 Km
around the Winner Creek Gorge, on board of a little
tramthat passes through a profuse forest, following
the Crow Pass path in order to relish an amazing al-
pine promenade, where the Dall sheep are present.
The Crow Pass has relics from the times of the gold
rushmines, a glacier and an alpine lake. However, in
order to render tribute to these lands, there is noth-
ing like getting on the Alaska Railroad, a railroad
that has delivered transport service to ports and
communities to and from the Alaska center-south
and Alaska interior.
For over 90 years, this tramhas been able to cover
all types of necessities from the ones related to the
conquest of an inhospitable territory, until the most
modern ones as it is the touristic transport. The pack-
ages of railroad adventure comprehend a wide variety
of lodgings and excursions in a nearly 800 kilometers
route, aboard trains that operate on a daily basis in
summertime, and onlyweekends inwintertime.
During the summer season, the stars of the tours
are the Denali Star, with two trains: one that goes
through the south of Fairbanks to Anchorage; and
the other that goes from the north of Anchorage to
Fairbanks; both stop in Talkeetna and Denali; anoth-
er is the Coastal Classic, that goes fromAnchorage to
Seward, stopping in Girdwood, and then returning to
Seward the same day; also the Glacier Discovery that
departs from Anchorage to Whittier, stopping two
times in Portage before continuing to Spenser Whis-
tle Stop and Grandview. This train comes back to Por-
tage andWhittier but not Anchorage. The passengers
return to Anchorage by bus fromPortage.
