Día 2:
Para cuando sonó el despertador, yo estaba en
el elevador. Ese día empecé en el Manneken Smiles
(Palacio de la Risa), muy cercano al hotel para, ya
rejuvenecido por la experiencia de ver millones de
sonrisas bajo un mismo techo, continuar exploran-
do La Grand Place, considerada patrimonio cultural
de la humanidad desde 1998 por la UNESCO. Su ar-
quitectura mezcla el barroco, el gótico y Luis XIV y
deja sin aliento a quien la conoce. La Plaza como tal
existe desde 1174 y su nombre original era Neder-
marckt (Mercado Bajo), el paso de los años ha pasado
factura y la Plaza ha sufrido muchas modificaciones,
e incluso una reconstrucción casi total después del
bombardeo ordenado en 1695 por Luis XIV. Aunque
los proyectos arquitectónicos para cada fachada te-
nían que ser revisados y aprobados por las autorida-
des de la ciudad, en sólo 4 años La Grand Place estaba
otra vez en pie con la belleza que la hace imperdible.
Para comer, bajé a Le Restaurant Cave du Roy,
impresionante sótano construído en el siglo XVII que
conserva su estilo arquitectónico. Deliciosa crema de
mejillones con azafrán, inmejorables mejillones Ries-
ling, Chocolate Delight como postre (obviamente) y
un Saint-Aubin 2011; ahora sí, listo para continuar.
Después, a la sedemundial de La Orden del Elefante
Rosa, el Delirium Café, donde vería nuevamente a Mi-
chael para planear el tercer día con una deliciosa Deli-
rium Tremens, nombrada mejor cerveza del mundo en
el CampeonatoMundial de Cerveza de 1998 en Chicago.
El Delirium Café es parte del libro Guinness por tener
más de 2000 variedades de cerveza en stock. En otras
palabras, mi tipo de lugar.
Día 2:
By the time the alarm rang, I was in the el-
evator. That day began at the Manneken Smiles
(Palace of Laughter), very close to the hotel, reju-
venated by the experience of seeing millions of
smiles under one roof, I continue to explore the
Grand Place, a UNESCO world heritage site since
1998. Its architecture blends the Baroque, Gothic
and Louis XIV; it is quite breathtaking for those
who know her. The Plaza as such exists since 1174
and was originally named Nedermarckt (Lower
Market), the passage of time had taken its toll and
the Plaza has undergone many changes, and even
a near-total reconstruction after a bombing in
1695 by ordered by Louis XIV. Although architec-
tural projects for each facade had to be reviewed
and approved by the city authorities, in just four
years The Grand Place stands with beauty that
makes it unmissable.
For lunch, I went to Le Restaurant Cave du Roy,
impressive cellar built in the seventeenth century
that retains its architectural style. Delicious cream
of mussels with saffron, superb Riesling mussels,
Chocolate Delight for dessert (obviously) and a Saint-
Aubin 2011wine bottle, now, I’m ready to go.
Then, at the world headquarters of The Order of
the Pink Elephant, the DeliriumCafe, where Michael
would plan the third day with a delicious Delirium
Tremens, named best beer in the world at the World
Beer Championship of 1998 in Chicago. The De-
lirium Café is part of the Guinness Book for having
more than 2000 varieties of beer in stock. In other
words, my kind of place.
