En Londres hay diversos tipos de taxis. Unos son
los tradicionales, conocidos como “Hackney carriages”,
que pueden ser tomados en la calle sin reservación pre-
via, o con ella a través de un “sitio”. Los “Minicabs” de-
ben contratarse previamente, no pueden ser abordados
en la calle. Para ser conductor de taxi en Londres, los
aspirantes deben aprobar un difícil examen de atención
al pasajero y conocimientos prácticos. Existe un curso
de preparación, que puede tomar hasta cuatro años, y
por supuesto que hay taxistas multilingües.
Les llevamucho aprender. Se llama “The Knowledge”
y comprende saber por dónde ir a donde sea dentro del
área del Londres central. Quiero decir, Londres es como
la ciudad deMéxico: tiene una poblaciónmuy grande, así
que posiblemente no podrías conocer todos los subur-
bios, todas las afueras. Pero dentro de cierto perímetro
del Londres central, un chofer de taxi tiene que saber
llegar cerca del destino, de otra manera no puede seguir
adelante ni siquiera con un sistema GPS.
La guardia Real, el té a las 5, la aristocracia y la
pronunciación misma de su idioma han dado fama al
pueblo británico de ser “flemático”. Sin embargo lla-
ma mucho la atención el humor lúcido y a la vez agu-
do de los comediantes del Reino Unido. El contraste
da origen a la duda: ¿son flemáticos o humorísticos?
Esto parece interesante. La gente británica es flemá-
tica en el sentido de que, tal vez históricamente, cultural-
mente, no acostumbra apanicarse, es calmada. Valoran
que la gente sea calmada, ordenada, así que la gente se
adapta; de hecho, losmexicanos se adaptan allá.

In London there are different types of taxis.
Some are traditional, known as “Hackney carriag-
es”, which can be taken in the street without prior
reservation, or with it through a “taxisite”. The
“Minicabs” must be hired in advance, they can-
not be boarded in the street. To be a taxi driver in
London, applicants must pass a difficult exam for
passenger service and expertise. There is a prepa-
ration course that can take up to four years, and
of course there are multilingual drivers.
It takes a lot to learn. It’s called “The Knowl-
edge” and is a test that includes knowing where
to go anywhere within the central London area. I
mean, London is like Mexico City: it has a very large
population, so you could not possibly know all the
neighborhoods, all the suburbs. But within a certain
perimeter of central London, a taxi driver has to see
how to get close to the destination, otherwise he
cannot proceed even with a GPS system.
TheRoyal Guard, tea at 5, the aristocracy and even
the pronunciation of their language have brought
fame to the British people to be “phlegmatic”. How-
ever one can appreciate the lucid while acute humor
of comedians in theUK. The contrast raises the ques-
tion: are they phlegmatic or humorous?
I find this interesting. British are phlegmatic in
the sense that, perhaps historically, culturally, is
not used to panic, they are calm. They value people
who are calm, who are orderly, so people adapt, in
fact, Mexicans adapt there.
